When you are in pain, a minute seems to last forever. We understand pain and how it can control your life. Research now shows that ignoring pain is NOT the best approach. In fact, the best pain control is achieved by using a whole variety of approaches. Our PainCARE™ program will help you to explore the many ways in which you can begin your journey to a more comfortable and meaningful life.

The word "PAIN” means many things to many people. Almost everyone has experienced short-term pain (for example, bumping your elbow or scraping your knee) and most people are quite good at getting out an icepack or a bandaid to fix the problem. Unfortunately, managing chronic or long-term pain is not nearly as straightforward… for a number of reasons!

Long-term pain is generally any pain that lasts for months or keeps coming back over and over again. The pain can be in just one spot (for example, arthritis in a knee or migraines) or it can be in many spots, as might be experienced by someone who has been in a car accident or someone with Fibromyalgia. Pain can spread to different locations in your body and can be quite different from day to day. Not knowing how your body will feel from one day to the next makes it very difficult to keep a job and plan activities. Pain sufferers often feel exhausted, because they cannot get comfortable in bed or they frequently wake themselves up from the pain of rolling onto a sore body part. Exhaustion also comes from the energy it takes to just deal with the pain of getting through the day's activities.

Most people living with long-term pain also feel quite sad, overwhelmed, or moody. They also report feeling quite short-tempered and have difficulty remembering things. Family and friends simply cannot see the amount of pain, fatigue, and suffering you are experiencing and often become impatient or frustrated with the fact that you are not the person you used to be. Long-term pain often causes important relationships to weaken and break down.

Long-term pain can also make other medical problems (e.g., diabetes, depression, high blood pressure) worse. This in turn can make your pain worse, and, so, a vicious cycle occurs. It is very important to get long-term pain under control. Untreated or poorly treated long-term pain will usually get worse over time: the old advice of "grin and bear it and it will go away" is simply not true.

Typically, people with long-term pain have been seen by a lot of different medical specialists and both they and their doctors are extremely frustrated by the fact that their pain is not improving. This is generally because long-term pain is usually made up of a complicated mixture of many kinds of pain and can only be successfully treated by using a combination of treatments. No two pain suffers are alike! The mixture of issues that make up your chronic pain is unique to you and so will be the group of treatments that will provide you with pain relief.

It is important to set realistic goals for your pain relief journey. Long-term pain almost always takes a long-term approach. In addition, you should expect that your pain will likely NOT disappear completely, rather it should lessen to a level where you can live a better life. As mentioned before, the best relief usually comes by using a combination of treatment options.

As you read this, pain may be controlling your life. You need to take back control of life and your pain!! The FIRST thing to do is to educate yourself about your pain (a number of quality reference books are available). This will help you to better understand how to help yourself and to be familiar with the many options available to reduce your symptoms.
