Personalized Medicine is a new branch of Medicine that uses information from your genetic code to predict risk of disease and response to medications. This information guides preventative therapies, nutritional options, lifestyle choices, and allows for custom tailoring investigations based on one’s genetic risk. In so doing, Personalized Medicine will change the way medicine is practised — making healthcare decisions based on the person, not on populations.

Personalized Medicine is a new branch of Medicine that uses information from your genetic code to predict your risk of inherited diseases and your individual response to medications/therapies. This information guides preventative therapies, nutritional options, lifestyle choices, and allows for custom tailoring investigations based on risk. In so doing, Personalized Medicine will undoubtedly change the way medicine is practised.

GENOMIX™ is a subsidiary of Integrated Circle of Care, Inc. Through research, networking, collaboration, and partnerships in the genomics field, our directive is to enhance understanding of how this field will impact at a grassroots level, current and future medical practice, especially the patient experience of having in-depth, predictive risk tools available.

Patient Advocacy

The patient is the centre of the genomics revolution. For the first time, detailed information regarding one’s future health risks are now being obtained privately around the world. Full genome sequencing is occurring with health privacy concerns mounting. Additionally, pharmaceutical and clinical research is focussing on genetic variations and this will drive a new era is genetic information collection, usage, and sharing. The patients rights and freedoms are at risk (perhaps more than ever before) and this will have far reaching implications for the consenting process, the limitations of data usage, ownership of data/gene sequences, future re-use of sequence data, etc. It is our hope that these issues can be tabled with key stakeholders early on so as to effect appropriate processes and protocols.

DTC (Direct-to-Consumer) Testing

There is much debate about the appropriateness of genetic tests (and their results) being sold directly to patients — the majority of whom do not have the medical training or analytical skills to interpret their results accurately. GENOMIX is interested in the methods DTC testing companies use to market to individuals, risks involved in this practice (both to patients and their physicians), and outcomes of this purchased testing. The goal of these inquiries is to better educate people and healthcare professionals on the various pitfalls involved with these tests and to develop appropriate communication skills.

Knowledge Transfer

In learning the various areas of concern involved in DTC testing, the design and implementation of physician and allied health professional training programs is a key interest. So is developing standardised training modules for assisting in testing programs for deployment of hospital/health office-based genetic testing. In working with EMR (Electronic Medical Records) software developers, the data intensive nature of Genomics/Personalized Medicine will have implications for software companies seeking to integrate this new information into their existing offerings.

Collaboration & Community

GENOMIX is already engaged in a number of studies and collaborative projects in both academia and in the private sector. Through a community-building project, GENOMIX will undertake a directory project that will assist in the effective navigation of the every growing list of stakeholders: government, academia, funding and venture agencies, researchers, advocacy groups, medical professionals, and genetic counsellors and technologists.
