Fibromyalgia (or “Fibro”) is a condition that causes pain throughout your body. Fibromyalgia also results in difficult/foggy thinking, tight joints/muscles, extreme exhaustion, trouble sleeping, restless legs, and troubled digestion. Fibromyalgia Syndrome (“Fibro” or “FMS”) is a condition that causes pain throughout your entire body (widespread pain). Scientists are not sure exactly how it is caused or starts. Approximately 3-6% of the population suffers from Fibromyalgia — that’s almost 1 million Canadians (or 10 million Americans). It is becoming clearer that Fibromyalgia is a neurologic condition (from within the brain and spinal cord) that affects the way pain signals coming from your body are felt. It also may be that the ability to ignore/reduce pain signals is lost in individuals suffering from Fibromyalgia. You are more likely to develop Fibromyalgia if you have been injured (e.g., car accident, whiplash, workplace injury) or after any trauma or prolonged illness. Other than widespread pain, Fibromyalgia also results in other common symptoms (which can differ between individuals), such as:

Sensitive or “electric” skin (referred to as Allodynia)
Excessive fatigue or physical exhaustion even after doing very light activity
Tender points in various areas of the body (which if touched can make you jump!)
Difficulty thinking (also referred to as Fibro Fog)
Poor concentration and memory
Trouble sleeping (not feeling you can sleep deep enough)
Restless legs (or twitching in legs and arms during rest or sleep)
Troubled or irritable bowel habits (diarrhea and constipation)

There is NO cure for Fibromyalgia. Successfully treating Fibromyalgia requires a holistic or broad approach. You must be prepared to take control of your condition if you want to improve your overall quality of life and improve your independence. First and foremost, you must be prepared to educate yourself on the condition (a number of quality reference books are available). Any number of medications, treatments, and procedures can be tried to reduce your symptoms (there is no single therapy that works for everyone despite what claims may be made). Trying this or that in a random fashion is both costly and time-consuming.

Fibromyalgia is a complicated condition. A team-based approach is an important way to maximize your benefits in the shortest possible time (whether it is to return to work, reduce disability, improve the quality of your life, or increase your potential).
